In Penn State Behrend's Virtual/Augmented Reality (VAR) Lab, students and faculty work with industry partners to develop augmented and virtual reality solutions.
In the lab, students can gain skills and experience through our four key initiatives: enhancing learning environments; digitally preserving and recreating historical sites; promoting mental health and well-being with digital solutions; and addressing training gaps in the workplace (e.g., virtual training simulations).

ADA Accessibility
An important aspect of trail design is ensuring access to all facilities. Such accessibility considerations not only help those with disabilities, but also make it easier for the general public to utilize spaces.
Accessibility, in design terms, is described by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which
guarantees equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities to participate in the mainstream of public life. To do so, the ADA sets requirements for facilities to prevent physical barriers that keep people with disabilities from participating. When recreational facilities are built or altered, they must comply with the ADA standards by providing an accessible route to the area of use and spectator areas.
Some ADA standards include regulations for grade running and cross slopes, firm, stable and slip-resistant surfaces, and labeled, accessible parking spaces. Two ADA accessible parking spaces are located immediate in front of the Cooper Road Trailhead.

Wetlands are areas where water covers the soil, or is present either at or near the surface of the soil all year or for varying periods of time during the year, including during the growing season. Water saturation (hydrology) largely determines how the soil develops and the types of plant and animal communities living in and on the soil. Wetlands may support both aquatic and terrestrial species. The prolonged presence of water creates conditions that favor the growth of specially adapted plants (hydrophytes) and promote the development of characteristic wetland (hydric) soils.
As a result of their very nature, wetlands are ecologically fragile ecosystems, which require care for their preservation. Boardwalks provide the means to keep visitors safe and clean whilst preventing any potential damage that could be done to a wetland.

Erosion is the number one problem for sustainable trails. Erosion is the natural process by which soil and other material is transported by wind or water. Steep slopes, long water flow paths, and fast-moving water are the three major causes of deep trail erosion. As trail slopes steepen, and water flows faster and longer, erosion increases.
If left unchecked, erosion can quickly cause serious damage to trails and the very resources we are charged to protect. Trail erosion can be accelerated by seasonal conditions, weather patterns, trail use, use volume, use type, terrain, vegetative cover, and gravity to name a few.

Made to look like a babbling brook, dry creek beds do not normally contain water, but instead channel and collect rainwater, allowing it to percolate into the ground slowly. This action acts to not only reduce erosion, but also pollutant loadings within the runoff. The VAR Lab will be building on our Phase 1 release of the Wintergreen Gorge Immersive Tour with several future releases. These will include:
• The Completion of the 4 Mile Creek Trail: Stretching from McConnell’s creek through the Prischak Trailhead all the way to the top by the Devil’s Backbone Trail
• The Addition of the Logan House and Behrend Fields Trailheads.
• Retaking the 12k Adaptive HDR photos of the Devil’s Backbone Trail and Trippe Connector Trail. This will ensure a more seamless, immersive experience.
• Additional aerial photography that will put the scale of the Gorge into perspective better than in this Phase 1 release.

Rain Gardens
A rain garden is a garden of native shrubs, perennials, and flowers planted in a small depression, which is generally formed on a natural slope. It is designed to temporarily hold and soak in rainwater runoff that flows from roofs, driveways, patios or lawns. Rain gardens are effective in removing up to 90% of nutrients and chemicals and up to 80% of sediments from the rainwater runoff. Compared to a conventional lawn, rain gardens allow for 30% more water to soak into the ground.

Littering is damaging to the environment and disrespectful to other patrons who wish to enjoy the Gorge in peace, without a lazy person’s potato chip bag scurrying across the ground. If you see litter within the Gorge, we ask you respectfully to pick it up and bring it to the dumpster. The Gorge needs us all to do our part!
In the unfortunate event that you see illegal substances, paraphernalia, or other dangerous items in the Gorge please report them to the University Police immediately. (814) 898-6101

Four Mile Creek
Despite its name, Fourmile Creek is approximately 8 miles in length, has a drainage basin of 11.93 square miles and is a part of the Lake Erie Watershed.
The headwaters of Fourmile Creek are in Greene Township, immediately north of Pennsylvania Route 8. From its headwaters, the creek carves a valley that gets deeper as it flows northwest. After several miles, it turns northwards, crosses under Interstate 90, exits Greene Township and enters Harborcreek Township. Beyond this, the creek flows under Pennsylvania Route 290, turns northwest and heads along the border between Harborcreek Township and the City of Erie. Upon entering the City of Erie, it continues northwest, passing through the Lawrence Park Golf Club and entering Lake Erie.

Weighing nearly one ton, the lion is constructed of reinforced fiberglass that is as durable as concrete. It is perched atop a retaining wall with the same 7.5-degree incline as the Nittany Lion shrine, the longstanding symbol of Penn State located at University Park.
